Manhandled student: Najib has to be reminded of his misdeeds

A Universiti Malaya (UM) student said he and his friends' motivation for their "silent protest" against former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak was to remind the latter of his misdeeds.
Wong Yan Ke (above) told Malaysiakini that the protest was not a form of provocation but instead an expression of disgust over Najib's ongoing charm campaign.
Wong said Najib appeared "smug" in public by pretending that there were no wrongdoings by his administration.
"We want to remind him that the public is still concerned over the 1MDB scandal. We want to tell Najib that he is not as popular as he thinks.
"We want to let him know there are people who oppose him and he should not be so arrogant," said the civil engineering student.
Wong had held up a large cardboard cutout of Fahmi Reza's famous "clown face Najib" caricature during the protest opposite a restaurant near UM where Najib was meeting supporters after Friday prayers today.
Umno supreme council member Lokman Noor Adam confronted Wong and tore up cut-out. An unidentified male then put Wong in a headlock.
Wong and his five friends were eventually escorted away by police.
According to Wong, there was no provocation on the part of his team because they kept silent during the protest until the violence started.
Wong claimed that apart from being choked, he received a slap and had his hair pulled. His lip was also cut.
He said Najib's supporters had impinged on his right and that of his friends to stage a protest.
On another matter, Wong, who heads the Universiti Malaya Association of New Youth (Umany), accused Najib of being a hypocrite for recently expressing "sadness" over malnourished university students after having slashed UM's funds previously.
"Why didn't you express your sadness when the allocation for UM was reduced when you are in power? "
"Also, when the students proposed to set up a food bank, he is the one who ignored the students' demand.
"Yes, Najib has a right to criticise the current government, but we want to tell him that he is so hypocritical," said Wong.
This was in reference to Najib's recent remarks over federal government plans to extend ongoing food bank programmes to help destitute university students. - Mkini
