Needs-based economic agenda remark not aimed at Azmin, says Anwar

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim has clarified that his refusal to compromise on Pakatan Harapan's economic agenda being needs-based instead of race-based was not directed at his deputy Azmin Ali.
Responding to a question on this, he said: “No, I was just reiterating this (stand) because I sense that there is some confusion... Some Malays feel that when we talk about a policy based on needs, their position will be marginalised.”
“I defer because I think the Malays will benefit more from a transparent needs-based policy,” he told reporters when met at the sidelines of the Dewan Rakyat sitting this afternoon.
In a Twitter posting yesterday, Anwar said he would not compromise on this matter.
"It is politically convenient to rile people up. But I will not compromise on this issue... We must shed racial politics and fear-mongering in order for Malaysia to progress," he added.
On March 3, Azmin, who is also economic affairs minister, said Harapan must fulfill its promises with regard to the bumiputera agenda.
"We must be brave and not hesitate in fulfilling our promises, especially on the Malay and bumiputera agenda, which is an integral part of the national agenda,” he had said.
Azmin's remarks came in the wake of Harapan failing to defend the Semenyih state seat in a by-election.
Meanwhile, Anwar told reporters that Harapan is concerned about the marginalised and the poor, the majority of whom are the Malays and bumiputera.
“But the solution has always been a transparent and coherent message that any policies by the government must be needs-based which means the majority of Malays and bumiputera will benefit.
“We will not marginalise the poor Indians or Chinese, or other ethnic communities. This is not something to rebuke anyone, I am just reiterating a statement (made earlier),” he added. - Mkini
