NGO lodges report against Pahang MB over Cameron Highlands evictions

A local NGO has lodged a police report against Pahang Menteri Besar Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, claiming he had issued false statements over the eviction of farmers in Cameron Highlands.
Malaysian Tamilar Kural president David Mashel said the move was in solidarity with the farmers in Kuala Terla, whom he alleges were "bullied" by the Pahang government.
"We are lodging the police report to oppose the lies and dirty tactics by Pahang BN, which wants to bully and punish the farmers in Kuala Terla," claimed Mashel, who lodged the report in Kuantan.
"There will be more reports lodged nationwide today against Wan Rosdy," he said.
Mashel claimed that Wan Rosdy had on numerous occasions issued false statements to justify the demolition of farms.
"His statements are not only untrue, but confusing. We urge the police to act against Wan Rosdy according to Section 200 of the Penal Code for making false statements," he stressed.
The reports follow Penang Deputy Chief Minister II P Ramasamy's call for Wan Rosdy to resign for purportedly not telling the truth about the farmers.
Wan Rosdy had said he had no option but to take action against the farmers for polluting Sungai Ichat.
The farmers claimed that their main source of water is not Sungai Ichat, but Sungai Terla, which is supposedly clean enough that its waters are processed and treated as drinking water for the Cameron Highlands residents.
Wan Rosdy had said that the move to evict the farmers and demolish the farms is an effort to prevent the water from being polluted.
Malaysiakini has contacted Wan Rosdy and is awaiting his response to the allegations.
Meanwhile, Malaysian Tamilar Kural secretary Satees Muniandy said the NGO will also lodge a report with the MACC against Wan Rosdy for abuse of power when he allegedly punished those who do not support BN.
"We urge Wan Rosdy to stop this political vengeance against the affected farmers and find a solution to help the farmers," said Satees, who is also DAP's Bagan Dalam assemblyperson.
"These are not illegal farmers, but they have become illegal due to Wan Rosdy's actions against them.
"Instead of chasing them out of their farms, these farmers should be given more time and alternative land," he stressed.
Satees urged Wan Rosdy to act instead against the illegal farming activities by a squatter colony on Sungai Terla, instead of targetting farmers who have been given temporary licences.
These licences were not renewed after 2017, although the farmers have been conducting their farming activities since the 1960s, he said.  - Mkini
