No alcohol and dancing: PAS recalls conditions set in partnership with BN in 70s

PETALING JAYA: PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang yesterday recalled some of the conditions his party laid out during its partnership with the Barisan Nasional (BN) in 1973 that included a ban on alcohol consumption and dancing in public.
PAS mouthpiece Harakah also quoted the Marang MP as saying the previous partnership had not bound his party to the Alliance, the coalition that predated the BN.
BN was founded in 1973.
PAS joined the Alliance in 1972 but left the party five years later following a tussle with Umno over which party should govern Kelantan.
Hadi recalled that PAS was allowed to proselytise in government offices, universities as well as on television and radio.
“The cooperation allowed activities that went against Islam, such as dancing and alcohol consumption, to be halted,” he said when opening the Rantau Panjang PAS assembly yesterday.
Hadi’s recollection of the conditions set in the 1970s comes in the wake of the alliance between the Islamist party and Umno.
Earlier this month, at a joint press conference with PAS’ top leaders, Umno acting president Mohamad Hasan announced the formalisation of cooperation between the two parties.
Describing their alliance as a “marriage”, Mohamad said Umno and PAS would work together as a united opposition bloc in Parliament and in future by-elections. - FMT
