Former Bersih chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan has joined the chorus of voices calling for Ronald Kiandee to step down or be removed as Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairperson.
She said this must be done with immediate effect.
“Whatever issues that are being investigated (by the PAC) can continue with him there, but not as chairperson.
“This is about checks and balances and there should be no compromise,” she told Malaysiakini.
Kiandee was appointed as PAC chairperson when he was a Sabah Umno lawmaker in accordance with Pakatan Harapan's pledge that the post is reserved for the opposition.
However, the Beluran MP has since joined Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's party Bersatu.
Yesterday, BN and PAS members of the PAC announced their resignation until the government agreed to replace the current chairperson.
Meanwhile, Teluk Intan MP Nga Kor Ming told reporters in Parliament yesterday that Kiandee should be given time to complete his work on the committee before being replaced.
The DAP lawmaker, who is also the Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker, said he believed the cabinet would eventually replace Kiandee at an appropriate time.
"There has to be a correct time because (the PAC) is hearing many cases (now)," he added.
Initially, Mahathir indicated that Kiandee would not be replaced after defecting from the opposition.
However, over the weekend, the premier said the government would consider finding another lawmaker to take over as PAC chief. - Mkini
