PEKAN (Bernama): The Pahang Fisheries Department is reminding the public of the ban on harvesting and selling "etak" freshwater clams (corbiculacea) from state rivers.
Its director Azahari Othman said excessive harvesting of the mollusc could adversely affect the eco-system of rivers.
''The molluscs are the natural fish food, especially the patin (silver catfish) species, which is very popular in Pahang.
"We have received reports some using lorries to cart the freshwater clams and profiting from its sale,'' he said when contacted here on Wednesday (March 13).
Azahari said he hoped the public would comply with the ban, adding that anyone caught selling the molluscs could be fined from RM100 to RM5,000 under the Pahang Fisheries Management Act 1991. – Bernama
