PAS MP's 'DAP anti-Islam' remark sparks verbal skirmish

PARLIAMENT | A quarrel broke out in Dewan Rakyat today after a PAS lawmaker labelled DAP as anti-Islam.
Debating royal decree, Ahmad Marzuk Shaary (PAS-Pengkalan Chepa) said Pakatan Harapan needed to get rid of DAP claiming it was a liability to the ruling coalition.
"DAP has become a liability to Harapan. If Harapan wants to be saved, dump the anti-Islam party DAP from the coalition," he said.
His remark caused an uproar among several DAP lawmakers including Kasthuri Patto (Harapan-Batu Kawan) [above] and Wong Hon Wai (Harapan-Bukit Bendera).
They demanded Ahmad Marzuk retract his remark, citing Article 36 of Standing Order which guides the decorum of MPs during a sitting.
Deputy speaker Mohd Rashid Hasnon (below) then instructed the PAS lawmaker to explain his controversial remark.
"I am going to explain at length but I just want to ask DAP to answer honestly. Is DAP subscribing to the PAS agenda of upholding Islamic laws," asked Ahmad Marzuk in reply.
"If DAP does not agree, then it is creating a rift among the people […] does not agree with Islamic (laws) means being anti-Islam," he said.
Kasthuri protested, saying this was not what Ahmad Marzuk meant by his labelling of DAP.
"Don't confuse the House, I know you are better than that," she said.
The PAS lawmaker, however, declined to retract his statement and instead maintained that DAP was indeed an anti-Islam party.
The deputy speaker then stepped in and asked Kasthuri to refer to the parliamentary Hansard before pursuing her protest.
Kasthuri declined to rest her case and claimed that the PAS lawmaker had not denied his remark.
"He admitted (he said it), so don't lie to the House by claiming that you did not say that DAP was an anti-Islam party.
"(Deputy) speaker, please ask him to retract his statement and apologise, please make a ruling," she appealed.
However, Rashid again asked the DAP lawmaker to obtain a copy of Hansard first.  - Mkini
