PETALING JAYA: A former PKR lawmaker chided Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar over her remark labelling Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad a “former dictator who wreaked so much damage.”
Lawyer N. Surendran questioned if such a remark is acceptable.
“Is this acceptable? In d middle of d escalating water agreement dispute & a serious ongoing territorial conflict, a prominent PH MP calls d PM a ‘former dictator who wreaked so much damage’ in an interview to a leading S’pore daily (sic),” he tweeted.
The former Padang Serai MP noted that the ‘timing, platform and manner were all wrong.’
Surendran’s tweeted with a link from Malaysiakini’s story ‘Not easy to work with Dr M, says ‘heartbroken’ Nurul Izzah.
The news portal story has Nurul Izzah making the remark in an interview with Singapore’s The Straits Times.
Straits Times executive editor Sumiko Tan had asked Nurul Izzah what was the cause of her ‘broken heart’.
Nurul Izzah replied ‘having to work with a former dictator who wreaked so much damage, not just on our lives, but the system. It was not easy.’
This was in reference to when her father Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was sent to prison in 1998.
Nurul Izzah also said that she really wanted the supremacy of the reform agenda to be the government’s main focus.
“And I always believe in a lot of goodness in people, but of course, it is important for people to prove themselves,” she added.
On Friday, Nurul Izzah confirmed that she had quit the parliament’s Public Accounts Committee.
She had tweeted on March 15 that the PAC chairman must be a member of the opposition to maintain accountability of the executive.
She also had announced in December last year that she would quit from all PKR party posts, while remaining as a parliamentary backbencher committed to reforms.
