Ramli officially country’s first Orang Asli MP

Ramli Mohd Nor, the country’s first Orang Asli lawmaker, after being sworn in as Cameron Highlands MP today.
KUALA LUMPUR: Newly elected Ramli Mohd Nor took his oath as Cameron Highlands MP in the Dewan Rakyat this morning.
He was sworn in before Dewan Rakyat speaker Mohd Ariff Md Yusof, when proceedings commenced.
This follows his victory in the Cameron Highlands by-election on Jan 26. Ramli, the country’s first Orang Asli MP, secured 12,038 votes to defeat Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) M Manogaran (8,800 votes) and independent candidates Sallehudin Ab Talib (314 votes) and Wong Seng Yee (276 votes).
The Cameron Highlands parliamentary seat fell vacant after the Election Court in Kuala Lumpur found that Barisan Nasional candidate C Sivarraajh had won due to corrupt practices in the May 9 polls last year.
Manogaran filed a petition in June, seeking to nullify Sivarraajh’s victory and saying the latter had violated the Election Offences Act 1954 by bribing voters from the Orang Asli community in the constituency.
He claimed Sivarraajh, who campaigned alongside Pahang Menteri Besar Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, had paid Orang Asli constituents between RM30 and RM1,000 through several Tok Batins (community chiefs) to ensure that they would vote for BN in the five-cornered fight.
Sivarraajh eventually won the seat with 10,307 votes, while Manogaran garnered 9,710. PAS’ Wan Mahadir Wan Mahmud polled 3,587, Parti Sosialis Malaysia’s B Suresh Kumar polled 680, and Berjasa candidate Mohd Tahir Kassim only managed 81.- FMT
