KUCHING: Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg says the state government is planning to build affordable international schools which will also cater to students from the lower income bracket.
He said this would help high-performing students apply to further their studies at internationally accredited universities overseas.
“We will be collaborating with Cambridge University, and the teachers will be specially trained,” he said at the Sin Chew Education Fair 2019 here today.
While the syllabus will follow international standards, it will also include Bahasa Malaysia, he said.
“The budget allocation will be tabled in the coming state budget.”
However, there is no decision on a timeline for the schools as suitable sites must be found first.
Abang Johari said many students are unable to enrol in international schools due to the high fees.
“We plan to build five of these schools in Kuching, Sibu, Miri and Bintulu, with fees that are lower than those at other international schools,” he said, adding that the government wished to produce more elite students who are capable of contributing to the state’s development. - FMT
