Shafee to challenge AG's bid to cite him for contempt

Lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah will file an application to set aside the leave granted to attorney-general Tommy Thomas to cite him for contempt for his comments on the ongoing case against his client, former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.
This was relayed by Shafee's lawyer David Matthews to High Court judge Mohd Firuz Jaffril in Kuala Lumpur today, according to senior federal counsel Shamsul Bolhassan.
"He has yet to file the application," Shamsul said, adding that the court was informed that Shafee needs at least three weeks to file the application.
“(The court then directed that) Shafee's lawyers file the application by April 15, we (the prosecution) file a reply to the application by April 29, and May 6 for reply (from Shafee to the prosecution)," he said.
Speaking to reporters after the matter came up for case management, Shamsul noted that the court had earlier fixed May 23 to hear Shafee's application.
Shafee himself was not present in court as he is currently in Sydney. Lawyer Karen Cheah held a watching brief for the Malaysian Bar.
On March 1, the High Court in Kuala Lumpur granted leave to Thomas to proceed with his bid to cite Shafee for contempt over comments the latter made in a KiniTV video entitled "Shafee: This is completely bonkers."
The lawyer made the comments after Najib was granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal over three money laundering charges on Feb 7.
However, Najib was slapped with the same three charges the following day.
Shafee subsequently held a press conference, whereby he is alleged to have insinuated that the move involved an influence on the judge and witnesses, as well as fabrication of evidence. - Mkini
