'Thank you, minister' - BN MPs heap praise on Zuraida

PARLIAMENT | BN MPs typically have very few kind words for the Pakatan Harapan government, but several of them today heaped praise on Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin as she addressed their concerns in the Dewan Rakyat.
In her winding-up speech, Zuraida touched on affordable homes as well. One BN MP after another then stood up to ask about the status of affordable housing projects in their constituencies.
"I would also like to ask the minister, who is so kind compared to other ministers - I'm praising her, okay, if something is being done right, I will say so. I would like to ask about a people's housing project (PPR) in Sungai Tinggi," said Noh Omar (BN-Tanjong Karang).
"The land was given by Berjaya Group for free and it is for estate workers, therefore, I hope Indian MPs will also support this. Unfortunately, this project is not included in the list (of affordable houses) under the Housing and Local Government Ministry," added the former housing and local government minister.
To this, Zuraida said her ministry, in cooperation with Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department P Waythamoorthy, was formulating a housing policy for estate workers and indigenous people, in addition to the existing affordable housing policy.
Chipping in, Halimah Mohd Sadique (BN-Kota Tinggi) also praised Zuraida, who merely smiled.
"Rarely would a former minister from the opposition praise a minister from Pakatan Harapan. This is indeed a minister who performs," she said.
Earlier, Halimah also asked about the status of a PPR project in Kluang.
"Even though I am the MP for Kota Tinggi, I live in Kluang... The PPR project in Kluang already has land, albeit a private one. The launch was already done and I hope the minister would consider it for the people for Kluang," she said.
To this, Zuraida said the government wants such projects to be on state land instead of private ones.
"We have asked the state government to identify state land, failing which, we will move to the second stage where the private company will be allowed to give its proposal and if the price is suitable, God willing, we will consider it," she said.
Earlier, Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim (BN-Baling) had also asked if the PPR project for the hardcore poor in his constituency, which was officiated by the previous government in 2017, would still proceed.
"It's been some time. I would like to ask the minister whether the Finance Ministry agrees to help these people by continuing this project as the land has been purchased," he said.
Zuraida then said the project was approved by the new government and would proceed this year.
"Thank you, minister," Abdul Azeez replied.
Ismail Mohamed Said (BN-Kuala Krau), who did not have a question, also stood up to record his thanks to Zuraida.
"I would like to record my thanks to the minister for approving the PPR in Kuala Krau to proceed even though it was initiated by the previous minister. Thank you, minister," he said.
Shamsul Anuar Nasarah (BN-Lenggong) also asked about the status of a PPR project in his constituency, specifically in Kampung Chain.
Zuraida said the project had been approved on paper, but a site visit was required to determine the suitability of the location. - Mkini
