Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng today pointed out that the Penang undersea tunnel project was awarded to contractor Consortium Zenith BUCG Sdn Bhd via an open tender, stressing there was no corruption involved.
"How can there be corruption when it was awarded via open tender? The case has been investigated (by the MACC) and no action (was) taken.
"All this was done under the previous government," the former Penang chief minister told reporters in George Town today.
Lim was responding to blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin's purported exposé of MACC investigation papers on the RM6.3 billion tunnel project.
The blogger had claimed the documents implicated several DAP leaders, including Lim, as receiving kickbacks from Zenith.
Branding Raja Petra a liar, and pointing out that the MACC had lodged a police report on the blogger's claims, Lim said the Penang government had explained the details of the project at length.
"These are lies (by Raja Petra) which he directed at four other exco members in Penang. You know who are the other four exco members, ridiculous.
"I do not know what kind of lies he wants to make, but should we be entertaining such lies?
"These lies are meant to tarnish my name and those of the four exco members, the state government and Pakatan Harapan as well," he stressed.
Following Raja Petra's blog post, PAS information chief Nasrudin Hassan yesterday urged the Penang government to furnish details of the tunnel project.
"How much was the actual cost of the project? Was it openly tendered? And if so, reveal the details of the tender.
"What were the terms agreed between the developer and Lim, including the deals involving the change of land lots at strategic locations in Penang? Please present the developer's background and partners involved.
"Are they all experienced and able to execute the project on this scale?" he asked, adding that the people deserve an explanation as the MACC has been investigating a graft case in relation to the project for over a year.
In response, Lim recalled a suit he filed against Nasrudin for similar claims made against him in 2014.
Nasrudin later withdrew the case, expressed regret and paid Lim RM10,000 in compensation.
"You have to take into account there was a court case and that he paid the money; there was a cheque," Lim said. - Mkini
