Zahid absent on first day of Dewan Rakyat, uncontactable

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who went on leave following criticism of his leadership, did not attend the first day of the Dewan Rakyat sitting for this year, which was officiated by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong this morning.

Confirming this, Umno vice-president Mahdzir Khalid, however, did not know the reason for the Bagan Datuk MP's absence.
"He didn't come... He couldn't be contacted," Mahdzir added.
Zahid announced on Dec 18 that he was going on leave after several MPs quit Umno and others threatened to follow suit in protest against his leadership.
Although he remains as the officially elected Umno president, Zahid has relinquished control to his deputy, Mohamad Hasan, who serves as acting chief for both the party and BN.
Zahid also resigned as opposition leader. Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri has since been appointed to the post.
Zahid has remained out of the limelight since going on leave, except for making an appearance during the recent Semenyih by-election.

On a separate matter, Mahdzir (photo) said BN would nominate a new candidate for the post of Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairperson.
This is after the candidate it nominated previously, Beluran MP Ronald Kiandee, quit Umno to become a government-friendly independent.
"We have the name, we only have one name," he added.
Mahdzir did not reveal the name, but said it would be submitted to the Dewan Rakyat speaker. - Mkini
