Azmin: PKR leaders will defend Anwar against ‘gutter politics’

PKR AGM | PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali says he and the party’s top leadership will defend party president Anwar Ibrahim against underhanded political tactics.
He said so when asked about a sexual misconduct allegation levelled against Anwar by a former staff member.
“Anwar already explained himself earlier today. As the party’s deputy president, I and the party’s top leadership will defend Anwar.
“From the start, we as a party have always been against gutter politics. Such dirty and disgusting politics are not part of our culture.

“We want those who disagree with us to come forth with healthy arguments, not resort to such slander and disgusting practices,” Azmin said during a press conference launching the annual meets of PKR’s youth and women wings in Malacca tonight.
Azmin hoped that the people behind the accusations against Anwar would face the appropriate punishment.
Yesterday, Anwar’s former research officer Muhammed Yusoff Rawther released a statutory declaration alleging that he had been a victim of indecent exposure, molest and a lewd proposal by his ex-boss on Oct 2, 2018.
Malaysiakini is unable to independently verify the statutory declaration.
Anwar has since denied the allegations and counter-claimed that he was campaigning in the Port Dickson by-election on Oct 2 last year.
The Port Dickson MP also characterised the claim as an attempt to tarnish his reputation in light of both this weekend’s PKR Congress and the PM transition.
A police report has been lodged on the matter and a letter of demand has been sent to Yusoff to retract his allegation.
No other party meet
Meanwhile, Azmin stated that there will only be one PKR Congress this weekend.
“There is no other meeting except the congress in Malacca,” he answered when asked if a separate meeting among party leaders planned for the Renaissance Hotel in Kuala Lumpur would proceed.
PKR Youth vice-chief Nazree Yunus, who is aligned to Azmin, previously confirmed that such a meeting would run concurrently with the Malacca congress.
Azmin and vice president Zuraida Kamaruddin, who are estranged from Anwar, were slated to attend it.
The meeting now appears to be scuttled after apparent reconciliatory discussions between Anwar and Azmin. - Mkini
