The father of murdered Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu views the shocking revelation by former cop on death row Azilah Hadri today as a chance for Malaysia to clear its name.
Setev Shaariibuu said he was currently admitted for a health condition but was aware that Azilah had confessed to having murdered Altantuya in 2006 upon alleged instructions from Najib Razak, who was then deputy prime minister.
"It is an opportunity for the present Malaysian authorities to clean the country's name at the international level if they can follow up with this revelation," said Setev from Ulaanbataar.
"We hope this latest revelation can hasten the truth and help my family seek justice for my daughter, who left us so suddenly and unfairly 13 years ago," he added.
Setev said although 13 years have passed since Altantuya's brutal murder, her family had continued to harbour hope that justice will somehow be served.
He promised to speak more about the current situation once he is released from hospital.
"I will be issuing a more detailed statement about the matter in a few days."
With the SD, Azilah is now applying to the Federal Court for a review of the court's decision which found him guilty of murder.
Azilah, Najib's former bodyguard, was convicted of murdering Altantuya together with fellow police special actions unit (UTK) personnel Sirul Azhar Umar, who is currently in an immigration detention centre in Sydney, Australia.
Sirul Azhar remains in the Villawood detention centre as Australia had refused to deport him due to the death penalty in Malaysia.
They were sentenced to death in 2009 for her murder and for blowing up Altantuya's remains with military-grade explosives in October 2006 in a jungle clearing in Puncak Alam, Shah Alam.
Political analysis, Abdul Razak Baginda, an associate of Najib, was acquitted of abetting in her murder.
Both Najib and Abdul Razak had vehemently rejected Azilah's SD content, with the former prime minister describing it as a "complete fabrication".
Although the Court of Appeal overturned their conviction in August 2013, the guilty verdict was reinstated by the Federal Court in January 2015.
Setev is taking legal action against the Malaysian government, Najib, Abdul Razak and the two former cops for Altantuya's murder. - Mkini
