GEORGE TOWN: Police described how a lone robber grabbed RM231,000 in hypermarket takings while security guards were loading an armoured van in Bayan Lepas this morning.
The robbery caused huge traffic congestion all over Penang island after police set up road blocks on the coastal highway and closed two eastbound lanes of the Penang bridge.
The robbery took place a week after similar traffic jams occurred because of a fake robbery involving a nasi kandar restaurant’s takings.
City police chief Soffian Santong said today’s robber, wearing a motorcycle helmet, had come up behind a guard who was carrying three bags filled with cash and whipped him in the face with what appeared to be a pistol.
A struggle ensued, while the driver of the armoured van flung a gun at the guard so he could use it to apprehend the attacker, but the robber grabbed one of the three cash-filled bags and ran.
The bag contained RM231,000 in hypermarket takings, Soffian said.
The guard gave chase but failed to catch the man, who went down a flight of stairs to the road below and made away with an accomplice riding a Yamaha 110 motorcycle with a BEY 408 number plate.
Soffian said the motorcycle had been reported missing in USJ Subang Jaya in 2006.

He said CCTV footage of the incident was being examined. - FMT
