MTUC seeks urgent meeting with ROS after 'suspension' letter surfaces

The future of the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) has come into question following the appearance of a suspension letter purportedly from the Registrar of Societies (ROS).
The letter, which has yet to be confirmed to be genuine, has been circulating in union and media circles and appears to be from the ROS to the MTUC saying that the latter has been suspended effective Dec 13.
MTUC secretary-general J Solomon (above) said he was at the office of the ROS to seek an immediate and urgent meeting with them on the matter.
"They closed earlier as it is Friday and I am waiting to see them after 2.45pm," he told Malaysiakini.

Earlier, Solomon said he had received the screenshot of the letter but was unaware if it was genuine or not.
MTUC president Abdul Halim Mansor, who is currently overseas, said that he was surprised at this development.
"I am surprised as we have sent documents and letters to inform them of our activities. The ROS has not called us till today."
Solomon has indicated that the MTUC is due to hold a General Council meeting soon which will decide the date of the group's next Triennial Delegates Conference, which will also feature the election of a new leadership team.
Last week, MTUC Sarawak secretary Andrew Lo (above) made a serious claim that the MTUC has not fully convened a full General Council meeting ever since the elections of the current top officials in 2016.
"The General Council is the supreme authority of MTUC and comprises of all affiliates Unions and Divisions of MTUC and must meet at least once in six months," he alleged in a statement on Dec 11.
Another union source also told Malaysiakini that the MTUC leadership had, in fact, received a show-cause letter from the ROS at least two months ago for its failure to conduct meetings as prescribed.
The MTUC, which was formed in 1949, is an umbrella body with union affiliates representing major industries and sectors and boasts approximately 500,000 members.
Malaysiakini is attempting to contact the ROS to clarify the matter. - Mkini
