UMNO AGM | A Johor Umno delegate has urged Muafakat National to adopt a new Malay nationalism which is to move away from the practice of Malay supremacy.
In his debate, Kulai Umno division delegate Mohd Jafni Md Shukor shared how Johor implemented its consensus, dubbed Muafakat National in the southern state.
"If we want to be seen as the party that struggle for nationalism, as a sincere and honest country, we want to see Muafakat National as an inclusive agenda for all races," he said.
Both Umno and PAS must change their understanding of the fundamental struggle of their respective parties to moderate approach, according to Jafni.
At the same time, he said, the parties will also uphold their thrust in Islam, Malay and Malaysia.
"This is what it meant in the new Malays nationalism. Umno, via the Muafakat National (charter) must show the people that Islam is a democratic, progressive and moderate religion," he said.
"We must show that Malay is an ethnic that strive for success and want to become progressive.
"We must learn to move away from the practice of Malay supremacy, where we are too proud to be the landowner and too comfortable about it," he said.
"Yes, while we can be a proud landowner, we must be a moderate one," he said, adding the Malays should be the landowners that are successful in education, the economy and society.
He said Muafakat Nasional should also protect the rights of the Malays, Muslims and other ethnicities. - Mkini
