MyWatch chairman Sanjeevan acquitted of extortion charge

MyWatch chairman Sanjeevan.
PETALING JAYA: Malaysian Crime Watch Task Force (MyWatch) chairman R Sri Sanjeevan has been acquitted by the Magistrate’s Court on a charge of criminal intimidation and extortion allegedly committed three years ago after he was called to enter his defence by the High Court.
Magistrate Mohd Zaki Abdul Rahman made the decision after finding the prosecution had failed to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
The prosecution had appealed against a Magistrate’s Court decision in April last year to free him. The High Court then referred the case back to the magistrate’s court where Sanjeevan was asked to file his defence.
He was charged with extorting money from Goh Toh Hon, 41, by intimidating the victim.
According to the facts of the case, the MyWatch chairman was accused of extorting RM25,000 from Goh, failing which he allegedly threatened to expose the latter’s alleged illegal gambling activities.
He is said to have committed the offence at the Nilai toll plaza at 10.45pm on June 22, 2016.
Sanjeevan was charged under Section 384 of the Penal Code, which provides a jail term of up to 10 years or a fine or whipping upon conviction. - FMT
