KIMANIS POLLS | Kimanis Umno chief Mohamad Alamin has emerged as the most popular candidate to represent BN in Kimanis in a survey conducted by the coalition's Sabah chapter, said a source.
The survey is meant for Sabah BN, which has been given the authority by BN to pick its own candidate for Kimanis, to be fielded in the Jan 18 parliamentary by-election.
"We have shortlisted five to six candidates. We showed the list of candidates to the voters to choose whom they want to be fielded as the BN candidate for Kimanis by-election," the source said.
"So far, we have conducted four rounds of the survey on the ground," he said.
However, he said, said the final result will be known after Sabah BN receives the survey report.
Mohamad had previously won Bongawan, one of two state seats under Kimanis, in the 2013 general election.
He lost the seat to Warisan, which won with a majority of 795 votes in the 14th general election.
Also included in the list is Kimanis Umno Youth chief Ahmad Firdaus Anifah, the eldest son of former Kimanis MP Anifah Aman (photo), the source said.
News portal Free Malaysia Today quoted Sabah BN chief Bung Moktar Radin as confirming that Ahmad Firdaus and his younger brother, Ahmad Zachry Anifah, have also been shortlisted as candidates.
Unlike their father, who quit the party in September 2018, Ahmad Firdaus and Ahmad Zachry are still with Umno.
Ahmad Firdaus is a businessperson while there is little information about Ahmad Zachry.
Other candidates in the survey list are UMS lecturer Saat Ag Damit and former civil servant Ismail Ahmad, the source told Malaysiakini on the condition of anonymity.
He said they have conducted four rounds of the survey since the Federal Court nullified the 2018 election result for the Kimanis seat on Dec 12.
The source said BN will announce its candidate on Jan 1.
BN chairperson and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, MCA president Wee Ka Siong, MIC president S Vigneswaran and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang will attend the event, the source added.
The Kimanis by-election will be held on Jan 18 next year.
Nomination day will be Jan 4, with early voting on Jan 14.
During the 14th general election, Anifah had won with a slim majority of just 156 votes.
He garnered 11,942 votes in a three-cornered fight, with Karim receiving 11,786 votes and Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah’s Jaafar Ismail getting 1,300 votes. - Mkini
