Shuttler Peng Soon reveals he is suffering from facial paralysis

KUALA LUMPUR: Chan Peng Soon has revealed that he is suffering from facial paralysis.
In an Instagram video posted by the mixed doubles national shuttler, the left side of his face appeared to be affected.
"I have facial paralysis," said Peng Soon in slightly slurred speech, pointing to his face.
He revealed that there was no feeling in one side of his face and he could not shut his left eye completely.
He said it started affecting him on the eve of the World Tour Finals in Guangzhou, China.
In the Finals, Peng Soon and his partner Goh Liu Ying failed to win any of their group matches.
"I could not play as I felt my face stiffen during the last group match," he said in the video.
When contacted, his doubles partner Goh Liu Ying said Peng Soon wanted to play on against the South Korean pair Seo Jung-jae-Chae Yujung although he was in pain.
"He could not close his eyes and I kept asking him to stop playing but he just wanted to finish the match," said Liu Ying.
"He went for acupuncture on Wednesday (Dec 11) after our opening group match but it did not help.
Liu Ying said Peng Soon would get treatment in Kuala Lumpur.
"I'm still here in Guangzhou but he flew back Saturday (Dec 14).
"For now, his health is the utmost priority," she said.
The 2016 Rio Olympic Games silver medallists are currently ranked sixth in the world and have a good chance to qualify for the Tokyo Games next year.
But this recent episode may put their qualification process in jeopardy.
