Syed Saddiq writes to German ambassador, regrets UMS graduate’s Nazi salute

PETALING JAYA: Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman today expressed regret to the German Ambassador to Malaysia for the action of a student who gave a Nazi-style salute during last month’s Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) convocation.
A picture of the incident quickly went viral, and the German embassy expressed shock that the student had given the offensive salute considering the “terrible suffering that was brought upon the world during World War II by the Nazi regime”.
“Actions such as these reflect poorly on our society,” said Syed Saddiq in his letter to German Ambassador to Malaysia Nikolaus Graf Lambsdorff.
“Glorifying a leader who committed war crimes, genocide and ethnic cleansing is no laughing matter (and) supporting the holocaust contradicts other causes which also affect the Muslim community,” he added.
Previous reports said the graduate made the gesture in protest over perceived Jewish dominance of the world and as a sign of solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza.
Germany’s Nazi regime oversaw the state-sponsored murder of around six million Jews during World War II and Nazi signs and symbols, including the salute, are illegal in Germany. - FMT
