Minister in the Prime Minister's Department P Waythamoorthy has slammed BN senator T Mohan for making a false statement against him on the Hindraf rally held in November 2007.
This came after Mohan alleged that Waythamoorthy had mobilised the public to attend the Hindraf rally by stating that if everyone attends the protest, they could sue in the British courts and obtain compensation.
The MIC senator made the allegation when he was debating the Budget 2020 in the Dewan Negara.
Citing the parliamentary Hansard dated Dec 11, Waythamoorthy said Mohan also accused him of lying to the Indian community.
"That was slander and a false statement against me in Dewan Negara," said Waythamoorthy during a press conference at the Parliament's lobby today.
He said he had sued the British government in his own capacity August 2007, three months before the Hindraf rally instead of Mohan's claim that he gathered the people so they could file a suit against in the British courts.
He dismissed a question if he would take action against Mohan.
"That was brought up in the Dewan Negara and he is protected (from legal action)," he said.
Both Waythamoorthy (above) and Mohan had engaged in a war of words in the Dewan Negara yesterday where the former challenged the MIC senator to repeat his remarks outside the House for him to face legal action.
Waythamoorthy had also asked Mohan to withdraw his accusation and apologise to him yesterday.
However, Mohan insisted Waythamoorthy had said that he would sue the British government.
"I challenge you, if you have the guts, you go out and tell the media. You are the liar [...] I will sue you," slammed Waythamoorthy.
"If you don't know the facts, don't open your mouth," Waythamoorthy told Mohan at the Dewan Negara yesterday.
Meanwhile, Waythamoorthy clarified that the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) has decided not to allocate funding for a foundation linked to pro-BN political party Kongres Indian Muslim Malaysia (Kimma) based on its track record.
He was responding to Kimma president Syed Ibrahim Kader who slammed Mitra for cancelling the allocation given to it.
"I have checked with Mitra which said that Kimma did not apply for the allocation. Even if it had applied, Mitra would not approve it as Kimma is a political party," he said.
He, however, confirmed that Mitra had cancelled the application by Yayasan Kemajuan Islam Nasional (Yakin), which is linked to Kimma, in early 2019.
That was because Mitra found that the foundation had failed to implement eight programmes as agreed upon, he said.
Such failure had prompted the predecessor of Mitra, the Socio-Economic Development Unit of the Indian Community Unit (Sedic) to issue two warning letters to it in July and September 2018.
Prior to this, Yakin had received RM470, 000 in 2016, and RM230,000 last year.
Sedic was rebranded as Mitra in December 2018. - Mkini
