Bersatu supreme council affirms 'immediate' termination of Dr M's membership

Malaysiakini

The Bersatu supreme council meeting yesterday affirmed the "immediate termination" of the membership of disputed chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad, his son Mukhriz Mohamad and three others last month.
In a statement outlining the meeting held last night, party secretary-general Hamzah Zainuddin said the supreme council also affirmed the decision for Bersatu to leave the Pakatan Harapan coalition, as decided during a meeting on February 23, and to form the Bersatu-led Perikatan Nasional government.
The decision to exit the then ruling coalition, opposed by Mahathir (above) and his supporters, triggered a chain of events which ultimately led to the collapse of the Harapan government after less than two years in office.
On May 28, Mahathir, Bersatu deputy president Mukhriz, Bersatu Youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and Bersatu supreme council members Maszlee Malik and Amiruddin Hamzah had their memberships "nullified" for sitting on the opposition bench during the Dewan Rakyat sitting on May 18.
This termination had been contested by Mahathir and the four others, calling it invalid.
However, the party supreme council convened a meeting last night without the latter four, which was chaired by Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin.
“During the meeting, the supreme council acknowledged the task of Muhyiddin, as acting chairperson in line with Clause 16.9 of the Bersatu constitution in line with Mahathir’s resignation as chairperson on Feb 24.
“The council also affirmed that the membership of Mahathir, Mukhriz, Syed Saddiq, Amiruddin and Maszlee were terminated immediately... and the council’s interpretation of the termination of their membership is final,” Hamzah said.
He added that the council further affirmed his appointment as secretary-general on March 26 after the removal of his predecessor Marzuki Yahya, via a letter dated March 18, “in accordance to party constitution”.
