The meeting between former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and several Pakatan Harapan leaders in the capital city yesterday was not an official one, said Harapan presidential council secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
He stressed that the Harapan coalition is still strong, and that all decisions would be made according to consensus among all members.
“The afternoon meeting was not official. So, PKR did not take part as we were busy with our own duties.
“We (Harapan) remain strong. They (other Harapan component party leaders) have the right to meet with anyone for Harapan’s mutual interests. We respect and take into account all views,” he said when contacted by Malaysiakini.
Saifuddin, who is also PKR secretary-general, was responding to the absence of PKR leaders at the meeting in the Albukhary Foundation building in Kuala Lumpur (pictured above).
The meeting came to light after a photograph of it was shared by Mahathir’s aide Adam Mukhriz Mohd Muhayeddin on social media.
Seen in the image were the former premier, contested Bersatu deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir, contested Bersatu secretary-general Marzuki Yahaya, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, Warisan president Shafie Apdal, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, and DAP national organising secretary Anthony Loke.
Saifuddin further confirmed to Malaysiakini that PKR president Anwar Ibrahim had a separate meeting with Harapan component party leaders at the latter’s residence in Segambut Dalam last night.
“Yes, we had a meeting at Anwar’s house. The meeting was to reaffirm our commitment to strengthen Harapan in all decisions and political actions,” he said.
“All major decisions will be made according to consensus. Strengthening Harapan is our priority,” Saifuddin added.
Several pictures of the meeting (above) with Anwar were uploaded on Harapan’s Facebook page with the caption - “InshaAllah there will be big changes in the near future”.
