Leaders of Ali Biju’s former PKR division quit en mass

Malaysiakini

Twenty-five out of 29 Saratok PKR division office bearers have quit, delivering yet another blow to the party which has been facing a string of defections in recent months.
With the exit of more than two-thirds of the division’s office bearers, the national PKR leadership will have to either suspend, dissolve or take over the running of the division, according to the party constitution.
Saratok is the constituency of Deputy Energy and Natural Resources Minister Ali Biju, who quit PKR in late February and is now part of the Perikatan Nasional federal government.
He is also the lawmaker for Krian, a Sarawak legislative assembly constituency. Saratok is located south of Sarikei.
In a statement today, the 25 former office-bearers said they were quitting PKR because they have lost confidence in the party.
“The grassroots are aware of PKR’s internal wranglings which had caused the party we love to be in tatters and now lacks direction.
“We are disappointed because the party only prioritises the goals of the president to be prime minister and not the reformasi agenda,” said the group.
The group pledged allegiance to Ali, whose current party affiliations are uncertain, and said that PKR’s influence in Saratok can be attributed solely to their leader’s hard work.
“We believe that Ali, in his capacity as a deputy minister now, can bring development to our area and work for the people.
“It is undeniable that to the people of Saratok, Ali is a leader who cares for the people and we trust every decision he makes is for the people,” said the group.
They also pledged full support for Ali’s future bid to retain the Krian and Saratok seats. Ali is a two-term Krian lawmaker and a first-term Saratok MP. - Mkini
