NGO chief bombarded with hate comments for posting on refugees

Malaysiakini

NGO Refuge for the Refugees director Heidy Quah is perplexed with hate comments and harassments she received for posting about the plight of refugees at a detention centre.
Media portal Free Malaysia Today reported Quah as saying that her social media inbox is full of brutal attacks following her post on the matter.
“I’ve been working in this field for nearly 10 years. I’ve received some criticisms, but nothing as extreme as this.
“People have been filling up my inbox sending all sorts of hate comments and not just insulting my thoughts and opinions.
“It’s okay if you want to disengage, but don’t come to a point of threatening my safety. Don’t come to a point of attacking my family and race,” she said.
Quah said she's planning to lodge a report with the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) on the matter.
On June 5, Quah shared a Facebook post with a screenshot of a user who asked her to hang herself.
Prior to that, Quah had shared her experience in helping a woman who struggled to care for her baby at the detention centre.
“She was detained right after giving birth with her teeny tiny baby.
“Cells were so cramped up that there was no place to sleep. Barely any food to eat.
“No access to sanitary pads. She had to bleed through her pants every single day, and wash it under water that wasn't clean,” Quah had said.
Quah also revealed that the baby had to use a T-shirt for diapers.
“Immigration officers called me telling me the baby needs milk and diapers. I went to buy them and gave them.
“When I got there - they said they only allowed cash and I had to hand the money to officers who then, marked the amount to her alphanumerical number tagged on her. Not even her real name," she said.
Quah also said that the woman was handcuffed to the table while talking to her through a plastic wall with holes in it. - Mkini
