Putrajaya is studying a proposal to allow online news subscribers to enjoy tax incentives, says Communications and Multimedia Minister Saifuddin Abdullah.
The minister told The Star the proposal is the government's bid to support the media industry.
“Perhaps if there is a waiver on subscription tax, then people may want to, or people may be encouraged to, subscribe.
“We are looking into it. It’s not in the economic recovery plan, but it’s already on the table,” he said.
Saifuddin said a tax waiver on the importation of newsprint is also included in the proposal.
He also said the ministry is closely following the move by several countries such as Australia to push tech giants such as Facebook and Google to pay news publishers for their content.
“I know there are already countries trying to work on this matter. We should learn from their experience and see whether this is the way to go,” he said.
In another matter, Saifuddin said he is leading a newly-formed task force to bolster the digital economy.
“There is a task force (on the digital economy) that is being formed, with myself as the chair and Khairy Jamaluddin as the co-chair.
“We have to go full force on the digital economy,” he said. - Mkini
