SLIM POLLS | Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak told Slim by-election voters that they should vote for a BN candidate who is a local, instead of independent Amir Khusyairi Mohamad Tanusi.
The BN advisory board chairperson said Amir should contest in Teluk Intan, Perak where he hails from, Sinar Harian reported today.
"Ladies and gentlemen, this candidate who represents 'atuk' (former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad) comes from Teluk Intan, he does not know you. His place is Teluk Intan, so he should be contesting there, not here. Why does he want to contest in this by-election?
"We want a local who grew up here to represent us, a person who understands you, who won't go elsewhere. Whatever happens, he will stay here with you. This is what we want," Najib said.
According to the Malay daily, the Pekan MP said this in his speech at a political event organised by the Makkal Sakti political party in Slim River yesterday.
Amir Khusyairi (below) is a syariah lawyer, who is contesting in Slim for Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang). However, the party set up by Mahathir has yet to be formally registered, which is why Amir is contesting as an independent candidate.
Also backed by Pakatan Harapan, Amir is going against BN candidate Mohd Zaidi Aziz and another independent candidate, S Santharasekaran.
In his speech at the event titled '"Ceramah Perdana Bersama Bossku", Najib also raised the issue of Amir not being part of a ruling political party, claiming that the latter would not be able to do much to help the people of Slim.
"An independent candidate will only receive his allowance if he wins, but he cannot do anything for you. The one who can is the government of the day.
"We are a part of the Perikatan Nasional government. So, do not waste your votes," he added. - Mkini
