DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng is accusing Perikatan Nasional (PN) of "revenge politics" after Putrajaya has indicated that it may review the 18 percent toll charge discount for highways operated by Plus Malaysia Bhd.
"Clearly PN is carrying out revenge politics by dismantling bit by bit all the singular policies implemented by Pakatan Harapan, including the 18 percent toll discount.
"However, in their blind pursuit of vengeance, PN forgets that they are punishing the people using Plus highways, who will enjoy savings of RM500 million just for 2020 alone from the reduced toll charges.
"The government will also save RM600 million in 2020 alone from not paying compensation payments to Plus for deferring toll hikes," said Lim, who was finance minister under the previous Harapan government.
He also warned that removal of the 18 percent discount would see Penang Bridge users paying RM7 instead of RM5.74 or RM4.59, if the motorist was a Penang-based RFID user.
As Plus Malaysia owned many highways throughout the country, Lim said the 18 percent toll discount review should be stopped if the PN government had the best interest of the public at heart.
The discount was implemented in February as part of the Harapan's plans to fulfil its election promise to gradually abolish the highway toll charges.
For highways operated by Plus Malaysia, toll charges have been fixed permanently.
Lim was referring to Works Minister Fadillah Yusof's comment on Tuesday, in which he said a review was necessary because of the impact caused on other highways.
"What is the impact on the tolls of new highways that are being constructed? What is its impact on the proposals of new highways? What is the direction we want to take?
"This is something that has to be discussed and this is a question of policy," Fadillah had reportedly said. - Mkini
