PETALING JAYA: The Bangladeshi man who was featured in an Al Jazeera documentary about raids on illegal immigrants migrants is to be deported tonight.
The Immigration Department said Md Rayhan Kabir would be sent home to Bangladesh on a flight from KLIA. “The team taking him to KLIA is expected to arrive at 9pm,” it added.
On Wednesday, Rayhan’s lawyer Sumitha Shaanthini Kishna had told FMT that the department had informed her that no charges would be filed against Rayhan.
Rayhan’s work permit was revoked on July 8 and he detained on July 24.
He was among those featured in the Al Jazeera report, Locked Up in Malaysia’s Lockdown, which aired on July 3. The documentary claimed that authorities had treated migrants poorly during the movement control order period to contain the spread of Covid-19.
Al Jazeera itself is being investigated for various alleged offences, including sedition, defamation and improper use of network facilities. - FMT
