SLIM POLLS | The current Perikatan Nasional (PN) government was formed due to the need to save Malaysia from the damage caused by the previous Pakatan Harapan administration, said BN secretary-general Annuar Musa.
Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin went further by saying those who defected from Harapan should be treated as saviours, not traitors, reported Bernama.
The duo shared the stage at a ceramah (campaign speech) with their counterparts from PAS (Takiyuddin Hassan), MCA (Chong Sin Woon) and MIC (M Asojan) in support of the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the Slim by-election, Mohd Zaidi Aziz.
Their ceramah held at the Felda Trolak Utara multi-purpose hall centred mainly on the cooperation forged among the PN-aligned parties to save the country from Harapan.
Annuar claimed that the promised people’s agenda could not be fulfilled during the Harapan administration, but now, all leaders in the PN-led government were working closely and sharing their experience in helping Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to administer the country.
“The country must be saved, the country needs a captain, and the damage done by Harapan must be repaired,” he said.
Hamzah, who was elected to his third term as Larut MP under Umno in May 2018, defected to Bersatu which was in Harapan in Feb 2019. He was then part of the Harapan mass defection that brought PN to power in March 2020.
He said those who defected and caused the fall of the Harapan government should be held up as saviours instead of being decried as traitors.
“We gain power through elections. But after GE14, we (BN) lost and somebody else won.
“When others have won, we were forced to sacrifice to regain power. But who should sacrifice? That task fell to some of us to ensure we regain that power again.
“As such, we should uphold those who had sacrificed as saviours. They are not traitors but saviours.
He said that people should not be envious or jealous of those who sacrificed but treat them with sincerity and honesty.
Chong and Asojan, in the meantime, described the PN administration as having succeeded in taking Malaysia to greater heights despite being confronted with the Covid-19 pandemic.
Takiyuddin, in his speech, called on the voters in Slim, especially PAS supporters, to vote for Mohd Zaidi to enable PN to continue to serve the people.
The Slim by-election was called following the death of its incumbent Mohd Khusairi Abdul Talib on July 15. Voting is set for August 29.
Umno/BN candidate Mohd Zaidi will face independent Amir Khusyairi Mohamad Tanusi, who is backed by Pejuang and Harapan, as well as independent S Santharasekaran.
In GE14, BN won with a majority of 2,183 votes over the Bersatu candidate contesting on PKR ticket, Mohd Amran Ibrahim and PAS candidate, Muhammad Zulfadli Zainal. - Mkini
