Govt to consider tier system of fines for mask-wearing flouters

Malaysiakini

Putrajaya will consider implementing a tier system of fines for those flouting the mask-wearing rule, said Deputy Health Minister Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali.
“I have taken note of the proposal and the Health Ministry will bring the matter up during the Special Ministerial meeting," he said. This meeting has been fixed for today.
“I have discussed with the health minister for the proposal to be given further consideration during the meeting,” Noor Azmi (above) was quoted as saying by The Star in his reply to an emergency motion brought by Kelvin Yii (Harapan-Bandar Kuching) in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.
Yii called for the government to amend the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act to lower the current RM1,000 fine for the mandatory face mask ruling.
He showed a petition and claimed that parliamentarians from across the political divide supported the move for lower fines to be set.
Earlier, Yii pointed out there was confusion in the implementation of the mask-wearing rule and the definition of “crowded public spaces”.
“There was a case of an old lady who was issued an RM1,000 compound for not wearing a face mask, although she was just about to retrieve it from her car before going to a nearby market,” he said.
The high compound was disproportionate and unfair, especially for students, the disabled, as well as those in the B40 group, Yii said.
He called for a tier system for the fines to be implemented, starting from RM250 instead of the RM1,000 that has been fixed. - Mkini
