Health DG: Not actively testing target groups, focusing on clusters

Malaysiakini

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry has not been actively testing target groups but is instead concentrating its resources on active clusters to ensure they remain contained.
Testing numbers at tahfiz (20,874) and old folks homes (16,425) have been stagnant since July 24.
Asked about this during the ministry’s press conference today, director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said target groups with no new cases continued to be monitored, but not actively tested.
“We are not actively going after them because we found that the positive cases are less now, so we are monitoring in terms of the numbers.
“So our focus is mainly on the new clusters, especially in the northern region. That is where we are putting our resources,” he said.
The ministry previously identified several high-risk people groups and localities for targeted testing; including tahfiz, old folks homes, markets, foreign workers, and refugees.
Noor Hisham previously shared that the country's testing rate was 31.29 tests per 1,000 population as of Aug 7.
While this was far behind some developed countries, Malaysia's cumulative positive rate was a low 0.9 percent. This means 0.9 percent of all tests conducted were positive for Covid-19.
As for daily testing numbers, yesterday, 8,779 tests were conducted constituting 23 percent of the total daily capacity of 38,236.
As of noon today, five new cases were reported, bringing the active cases to 177.
Sixteen Covid-19 patients have recovered, bringing the recovery rate to 96.8 percent. - Mkini
