Ayer Hangat assemblyperson Juhari Bulat who is with Bersatu has been appointed as the new Kedah state legislative assembly speaker today.
His appointment was announced after his name was proposed by Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor (PAS-Jeneri) and seconded by Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail (Bersatu-Guar Chempedak) at the assembly sitting today.
This was following the resignation of the incumbent, PKR's former Kuala Kedah MP, Ahmad Kassim on Aug 15.
Juhari (above) previously held the position of deputy speaker since July 4, 2018, under the Pakatan Harapan government after the 14th general election. He had resigned from that post on Aug 23.
Meanwhile, PAS' Pantai Merdeka assemblyperson Ahmad Fadzli Hashim has been appointed as the new deputy speaker.
Earlier, tensions rose at the assembly session when opposition leader, Phahrolrazi Mohd Zawawi disputed the appointment of the speaker which he claimed did not follow the correct procedure.
Phahrolrazi claimed that the assemblypersons did not receive notice pertaining to the vacancy of the speaker post.
The current state assembly session will last for two days until tomorrow. The state government is now under PN which took over the administration from Harapan following a political coup.
On May 17, Sanusi was sworn in as menteri besar to replace Mukhriz Mahathir who had resigned after losing majority support.
