Pejuang leaders not for sale, Mahathir assures

Malaysiakini

SLIM POLLS | Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad assured that his new party's leaders will not engage in party hopping for monetary gain.
This includes their candidate for the Slim by-election, Amir Khusyairi Mohamad Tanus.
Citing Sabah as an example, Mahathir accused his rival Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin of using bribes in effort to take down Warisan.
"(Muhyiddin) bought 13 assemblypersons. This is how Muhyiddin gets support.
"I was shocked to hear that some were paid RM32 million to leave Warisan, some were paid RM5 million," he claimed during a ceramah in Felda Trolak Utara last night.
"All of us in Pejuang promise there will be no sale (of representatives).... when I called Amir and asked him whether he will sell (himself), he said no," the Pejuang chairperson added.
The Sabah state government collapsed after 13 assemblypersons defected from Warisan and Pakatan Harapan to support former chief minister Musa Aman. This led to the state legislature being dissolved.
Musa and the defectors have denied that any money was involved in the move.
Meanwhile, Mahathir said he aimed for his new party Parti Pejuang Tanah Air to be a corruption-free alternative to his former parties Umno and Bersatu.
The Pejuang pro-tem chairperson said the Slim by-election is thus an avenue for the people to show that they reject money politics.
"Politics (today) is not about fighting for race, religion, or country, but is politics to line pockets only.
"This Slim by-election is not to change the government, but it is important for the people of Slim to show to the government and all of Malaysia that the people do not like money politics.
"We (Pejuang) want to eradicate this system of bribes and corruption. Pejuang was formed to replace Umno and Bersatu," he said last night.
Pejuang is not yet formally registered, and its candidate Amir Khusyairi is contesting as an independent.
Mahathir formed Pejuang after being dumped by Bersatu in May, for refusing to side with Muhyiddin's Perikatan Nasional government in Parliament.
Tomorrow is polling day in Slim and Amir Khusyairi will take on Umno candidate Mohd Zaidi Aziz and fellow independent, former teacher S Santharasekaran.
The by-election was held after the incumbent assemblyperson Mohd Khusairi Abdul Talib passed away last month. He had held the seat for four terms since first being elected in 2004. - Mkini
