Penang to shutdown medical tourism after three arrivals from Indonesia

Malaysiakini

COVID-19 | Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said his state will no longer allow entry for medical tourists due to the re-emergence of Covid-19 infections.
In a statement last night, Chow (above) said the state government had not been informed that three Indonesian medical tourists arrived in Penang last Friday, and only read about it through news reports.
"The state government was not informed about the relevant flights until the news was published on Friday, Aug 14 by the relevant airlines," said Chow.
On that day, AirAsia announced the arrival of a medical charter flight from Medan at the Penang International Airport.
Chow said the Penang government would inform the Health Ministry and National Security Council (NSC) of its decision not to accept medical tourism cases due to the outbreak of fresh Covid-19 cases in the state.
He added that he would hold an emergency meeting with all relevant agencies today and confirm a final decision on this issue.
“I was informed that all patients had complied with all standard operating procedures fixed by the relevant authorities including the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council and the Immigration Department,” said Chow.
He added that his administration was committed to protecting the safety and health of its residents.
Indonesia has had more than 140,000 Covid-19 cases with 6,150 fatalities thus far. - Mkini
