PAS, together with allies Umno and Bersatu, could form a new government with two-thirds majority should snap polls be called, said PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.
"If you mix the support for PAS, Umno and Bersatu, there are many seats that we can win. We may be able to win a two-thirds majority," said Hadi in an interview with Reuters.
Hadi expected snap polls would take place sometime between this year-end and early next year.
Favouring snap elections, Hadi said this was necessary to increase Malay representation in Parliament and legitimise the Perikatan Nasional coalition's claim to power.
"To ensure political stability, it is important to have the race that dominates society to lead the government," he said.
He added that PN coalition parties were also committed to backing Muhyiddin Yassin as their prime ministerial candidate.
Talk of Muhyiddin, the current prime minister, calling for snap elections have been simmering ever since the formation of the PN government in March.
He currently leads a government with a very slim majority in Parliament.
Muhyiddin's party Bersatu is also currently facing desertion as a growing number of grassroots migrate to a new party formed by Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Mahathir and Muhyiddin are co-founders of Bersatu. However, Muhyiddin sacked Mahathir from the party in May. - Mkini
