Muafakat Nasional discussions on seat negotiations ahead of GE15 will only be done among component parties and not through individuals, said Umno vice-president Khaled Nordin.
As such, Khaled reportedly said the issue of Umno discussing with any person who recently joined Bersatu, including International Trade and Industries Minister Azmin Ali, does not arise.
"When it comes to discussions on election seat negotiations, it is between two parties, Umno and Bersatu.
"The issue of personal discussions between individuals does not arise," said Khaled as quoted by Utusan Malaysia.
The Umno vice-president said this when asked for comments on Azmin's formal entry to Bersatu last week, raising questions over whether the Gombak MP would be defending his seat that was contested by Umno in GE14.
On Saturday, Azmin and his allies gathered at Bersatu's National Congress 2020 in Kuala Lumpur officially handed over their membership applications to Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also Bersatu president.
Meanwhile, Johor Umno deputy chairperson Nur Jazlan Mohamed (photo) likened Azmin's move to join Bersatu to a floating lotus flower - looking good on the surface but without the support of strong roots.
He further claimed that Bersatu risks being seen as unprincipled as it attempts to welcome more non-Malay supporters and members.
"Like Umno and PAS, we have our grassroots, and their views are always considered to strengthen the party.
"They (Bersatu) only ride on the strength of others. In the past, it was Pakatan Harapan and maybe now Umno and PAS," he said. - Mkini
