Agong advises all MPs to support Budget 2021

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong has advised all MPs to support the Budget 2021 for the wellbeing of the people and to heal the economy following the Covid-19 pandemic.

The monarch also reiterated his call for MPs to put an end to political bickering.

Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah said this after granting a pre-cabinet meeting audience to Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin this afternoon.

"Sultan Abdullah advises MPs to give strong support to Budget 2021 for the people's wellbeing and continuity of their lives, as well as to recover the nation's economy which has been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic," read a statement issued by Comptroller of the Royal Household Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin.

In his statement today, Sultan Abdullah said the budget was important for the government and authorities, especially frontliners, to continue efforts to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.

"As such, Sultan Abdullah calls on MPs to abide by His Majesty's advice to them to immediately stop all political bickering and instead prioritise the people's welfare and country's wellbeing so that Budget 2021 is passed without any disturbance," the statement added.

On Sunday, the king had rejected Muhyiddin's bid for an emergency proclamation, but at the same time warned MPs against destabilising the government.

Critics have said that the emergency gambit was aimed at ensuring that the vote on Budget 2021 was not defeated in the Dewan Rakyat, amid pressure against Muhyiddin's government from Umno.

Federal Territories Minister Annuar Musa, however, said it would have been necessary to avoid a snap election amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

Following the Agong's decision on Sunday, various political parties have called for bipartisanship to ensure that the Budget 2021 is passed.

In his statement today, Sultan Abdullah said that political bickering for self-interest would not benefit the country and its people.

His Majesty expressed confidence in Muhyiddin's ability to lead the country through the Covid-19 crisis. - Mkini
