Air Selangor expects water supply to resume in stages starting 8am tomorrow

State water firm Air Selangor said it expects water supply to resume in stages starting 8am on Wednesday.

However, some districts will only enjoy full recovery of supply by 8am on Thursday, Air Selangor said.

It said all three phases of the Sungai Selangor water treatment centre and the Rantau Panjang treatment centre resumed operation at 6pm.

The supply will resume in stages according to districts, Air Selangor said.

Below is the schedule for the full recovery:

More than one million households in 1,292 areas in the Klang Valley woke up to dry taps this morning as water treatment plants were shut down due to odour pollution at intake points.

The state government said it does not rule out sabotage as the raw water pollution was detected today at 2am.

"This is because this pollution occurred at night and on a Sunday, usually the factories do not operate on Sunday ... we have lodged a police report so that the police can open an investigation paper to determine whether there is an element of sabotage or otherwise," Selangor exco in charge, Hee Loy Sian said.

In addition, Hee said the proposal to change the existing law in relation to the punishment for river pollution offences would be tabled at the next State Assembly sitting.

"Now the fine imposed is RM100,000 or imprisonment, we want the existing fine to be increased to RM200,000 to a maximum of RM1 million and also jail of not more than a year on offenders.

"Besides that, we will also reward RM20,000 to whistleblowers regarding river pollution activities, and the identities of the whistleblowers will be kept secret," he said.

This is one of several incidents affecting water supply to the Klang Valley in the past few months.

In September, 1.2 million households suffered water cuts similar to today, after pollution linked to a factory was detected.

Four company directors and a workshop manager at the factory were charged for alleged involvement in the pollution of Sungai Gong, Rawang. - Mkini
