Anwar claims cops asked for names of MPs backing him

 

Anwar Ibrahim claimed that the police had asked him to reveal the names of the MPs who are supporting him.

However, the opposition leader said he declined to do so, stating that the matter is between him and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

“I was questioned with regard to six cases, which in general was to provide them with the names of the MPs backing me.

“I told them that I have given the support letters from the respective party leaders (to the king).

“I said this is between me and the Agong, and has nothing to do with the police or the Home Ministry which instructed the police to find out the names,” he told reporters outside the Bukit Aman police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur this evening.

Following his audience with the king on Tuesday, Anwar told the media that he has the support of more than 120 MPs to form the government.

The PKR president said he had presented His Majesty with the necessary documents related to this matter and appealed for time to be given to the monarch to resolve the matter.

In a statement later, the comptroller of the royal household Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin said Anwar did not reveal the names of the MPs to the king to back his claim of having majority support.

He added that Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah had also advised the opposition leader to abide by and respect the legal process.

Following Anwar's audience, Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah met the king on the same day, igniting speculation that he is working with Dr Mahathir Mohamad on a separate political move.

Tengku Razaleigh, who is better known as Ku Li, also made public his letter to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun asking him to allow Mahathir's vote of no-confidence against Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

Mahathir and the opposition today filed several motions of no-confidence against the prime minister.

Meanwhile, more drama unfolded when it was announced that Umno is mulling withdrawing its support for Perikatan Nasional, which is clinging to power with a two-seat majority.

Sultan Abdullah, who was scheduled to meet with various party leaders, has postponed the meetings due to the Covid-19 restrictions.

In a statement today, the king reiterated his call not to plunge the nation into another round of political uncertainty amid the Covid-19 pandemic. - Mkini
