Anwar hopes MPs heed Agong's advice, act within constitution

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, who was vying to oust Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister, today acknowledged the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's "advice" against politicking which could affect the stability of the country's administration.

"I acknowledge the advice by the Agong for political leaders, including MPs, against excessive politicking. (This advice) must be appreciated.

"Political figures, including MPs, take heed and fulfil their responsibilities in line with the spirit of the constitution and responsibility to the rakyat, Parliament as an institution and the country in a way that takes into account the calls for justice, rejection of corruption and overcome elements of corruption.

"In view of this spirit, we will ensure (proper) planning to deal with the Covid-19 crisis, unemployment and poverty while spurring economic growth with better planning and effectiveness," said Anwar in a statement late this evening.

Meanwhile, Anwar praised the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Council of Rulers for their wisdom regarding the request by the prime minister and the cabinet for a proclamation of emergency.

Anwar said the decision by the Agong to reject the request was historical and it strengthened the constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy.

"It is clearly a decision in line with the spirit of the constitution and recognises the pulse of the people, expressed through responsible political leaders, civil society, academics and the media who do not wish to see democracy tainted," he said.

After conferring with the Council of Rulers at the Istana Negara this afternoon, the Agong decreed that cabinet's request for an emergency proclamation be denied.

His Majesty also decided that MPs should stop "politicking" or proceed with any action that could threaten the stability of the federal government, in view of the ongoing Covid-19 crisis.

The Agong was of the view that the current government was capable of implementing policies to curb the spread of Covid-19.

However, the Agong stressed that Budget 2021, slated to be tabled on Nov 6, was of utmost importance in government efforts to deal with Covid-19 and urged everyone to set aside their differences to assist the government. - Mkini
