Bersatu repeats Agong's call for MPs to stop threatening govt stability

Bersatu today reiterated the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's call for politicians to stop threatening maneuvers that could destabilise the government.

This comes a day after Umno mulled withdrawing support for Perikatan Nasional (PN) - with former premier Najib Abdul Razak mooting support for PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.

Umno ultimately decided to continue supporting PN.

"Bersatu urges all sides to uphold and obey His Majesty's decree to stop any political moves that could threaten the stability of the country's administration," said Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan (above).

The King's decree was made when he rejected PN's bid to declare an emergency, which has been viewed as a blow to Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin's credibility as prime minister.

However, Wan Saiful said Bersatu viewed the royal decree as validation that Muhyiddin's government was capable of handling the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said the PN government should be given space to focus on their work protecting the people and easing their burdens.

PN currently has a slim two-seat majority in Parliament and has been under pressure from both Umno and PKR.

Umno's ties with Bersatu - which leads PN - began to sour after Bersatu muscled the Umno out of the Sabah chief minister position in last month's state election.

Umno felt they had been making too many concessions to Bersatu, with Bersatu not reciprocating.

Its decision last night to continue supporting PN came with the caveat that it must come with more respect and political consensus.

There was also a call for a no-confidence vote against Muhyiddin by Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.

Meanwhile, PKR's Anwar claimed that he has the numbers to form a federal government - ostensibly with the support of Umno MPs, but this has yet to be proven. - Mkini
