Bookmark Enhanced MCO for Penang remand prison, quarters

The government today announced an enhanced movement control order (MCO) for the Penang remand prison and its quarters in the northeast district, said Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

The enhanced MCO for the two areas will start on Oct 15, 2020.

This will affect 2,830 individuals, including 2,306 prisoners, 304 prison staff and family members who are staying in the quarters as well as 220 prison staff and family members who are not staying in the quarters.

No one is allowed to leave or enter the two areas throughout the enhanced MCO. Basic needs and food assistance will be provided.

The movement of the prison staff will be decided based on the standard operating procedures issued by the Prisons Department, Ismail said.

Prisoners who were supposed to be released during the enhanced MCO will be isolated from the other prisoners.

In the cases of those prisoners who were supposed to be released during the enhanced MCO, Ismail said if their test comes back negative, they will be quarantined in a place which will be decided by the Penang Disaster Management Committee before they are released.

Meanwhile, for those who tested positive for Covid-19, they will be treated in a hospital like a normal citizen before they are released, he said.

The enhanced MCO came after the Penang remand prison cluster saw a spike in Covid-19 cases with 141 new cases yesterday. - Mkini
