Bus driver who triggered Ramai-Ramai cluster ferried election workers: MOH

COVID-19 | The index case of the Ramai-Ramai cluster in SandakanSabah was ferrying election workers during the state polls last month, the Health Ministry revealed today.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said of the 354 new cases reported today, 22 of them involved those in this new Ramai-Ramai cluster.

"We still have 48 active clusters today, including three new ones.

"(One of them is) the Ramai-Ramai cluster in Sandakan which involves a bus driver, who ferried election workers during the Sabah state election.

"Today, there are 22 more cases detected from this cluster, making the total number of cases 48," he said in a press conference via Facebook Live from his private residence.

Noor Hisham is under self-quarantine after being in contact with a minister who tested positive for the virus.

As of noon today, the Health Ministry has conducted screenings on 393 individuals linked to the cluster. However, it was not mentioned how many people in total the bus driver had ferried during the election period.

One of the positive individuals is now in intensive care, Noor Hisham added.

The Ramai-Ramai cluster was first made known to the public on Tuesday. It was discovered when the bus driver was tested positive for Covid-19 on Oct 3. He was earlier admitted to the Duchess of Kent Hospital in Sandakan after developing a sore throat and fever on Sept 27.

Meanwhile, Noor Hisham said that so far the country has seen a total of 150 infection clusters, of which 102 had successfully ended.

This included the Telaga cluster in Kedah, which ended today after it recorded zero new cases for 28 consecutive days.

The cluster involved a total of 16 positive cases. There was no Covid-19 death linked to this cluster.

The ministry believes that they have also managed to control two other clusters in Kedah, namely the Tawar and Sungai clusters, which did not record any new cases in several days.

Noor Hisham said that so far, they have conducted screenings on 25,406 individuals identified under the Sungai cluster and found 101 people positive.

For the Tawar cluster, health authorities tested 18,272 individuals and found 92 cases.

"Both did not show an increase in the number of cases since the past several days. So the ministry believes that we have successfully put under control the Sungai and Tawar clusters.

"We are monitoring them for 28 days before ending them," he added.- Mkini
