COVID-19 | Mass confusion followed the announcement of the conditional movement control order (MCO) to be enforced in Klang tomorrow, as residents working outside the area anticipate fresh restrictions on their movements.
Since early this morning, a large crowd had made their way to the Klang Selatan district police station, seeking clarification and authorisation to go out and work tomorrow.
Several individuals met by Malaysiakini, however, said that unlike the previous MCO period, this time they did not receive any authorisation from the police.
According to Amir Yusof, 34, he was confused as he had expected similar standard operating procedures (SOP) to be enforced.
"Previously during the MCO, the SOP was that police authorisation is required even though there is a letter from MITI (International Trades and Industries Ministry).
"Because I was confused, I came to the police station. Turns out there is no need (for police authorisation)," Amir said.
"I feel that if there is a need to do (conditional MCO), there must be clear SOP," added the administrative manager at a company in Petaling Jaya.
Senior citizen Saras Govindasamy said she went to the police station seeking authorisation to travel to Ipoh, Perak.
"I would like to go back to my hometown next week for a family matter. In the past, to travel interstate required a police letter.
"Had I known otherwise, I would have travelled back today. Now I came (to the police station) but police said they are unaware," the 65-year-old added.
Similarly, Klang resident Muthu Sinniah expressed concern that he would face difficulties in heading to work tomorrow.
"I am worried I will not make it to work. I already have my employer's letter, and I wanted the police authorisation.
"The SOP this time around is confusing," he said.
Police personnel from the Klang Selatan station later clarified that no authorisation letter will be issued for travels outside of the Klang district tomorrow, but workers are required to have one from their employer.
The personnel, however, said his explanation was subjected to any changes announced by the government at a later date.
Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Ismail Sabri Yaakob earlier today clarified that the conditional MCO applies only to the area within the Klang sub-district and not other areas such as Port Klang and Kapar.
International Trade and Industry Minister Azmin Ali also said the National Security Council (NSC) decided that it would be business as usual for all economic sectors in the affected area, with strict adherence to SOPs. - Mkini
