Cops confirm 6 probes against Anwar including sodomy, say no political pressure

 

Police have confirmed that it is investigating PKR president Anwar Ibrahim over six cases including sodomy.

Federal Criminal Investigation Department director Huzir Mohamed stressed that police were not acting on political pressure.

The investigation against Anwar, who was questioned by police yesterday, came after the Port Dickson MP announced that he had secured a majority to form a new government.

Huzir said Anwar was accompanied by his lawyer Ramkarpal Singh Deo and political secretary Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak when he was questioned at Bukit Aman yesterday.

"The investigation was conducted professionally without political pressure or instruction from any quarter.

"The police urge all quarters to give police space for a transparent and fair investigation.

"Stern action will be taken against those who deliberately threaten public order and safety," Huzir said in a statement today.

According to Huzir, police had questioned Anwar about a list of 121 MPs who are purportedly supporting him and was published on an online portal.

He said that a total of 113 police reports were lodged over the list, including by some of the MPs named in it. 

The matter was being investigated under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Section 505(b) of the Penal Code states that anyone who publishes or circulates any statement, rumour or report with the intent to cause fear or alarm to the public shall be punished with up to two years imprisonment or a fine or both.

Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 concerns the improper use of network facilities or services that is punishable with a fine of up to RM50,000 or imprisonment of up to one year or both.

"The claim (of 121 MPs supporting Anwar) was widely circulated in the media and caused various unhealthy speculations.

"The spread online is intended to cause fear among the public that could lead to public order offences," Huzir added.

Apart from the list of MPs, he said Anwar was questioned on five separate cases.

They are as follows:

1. On Anwar's statement that Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's government has fallen from losing his majority in the Dewan Rakyat.
2. A statutory declaration by one Aidil Azim Abu Adam alleging sodomy.
3. A video alleging that gambling dens were operating during the movement control order period.
4. A video alleging that there are 6.7 million foreigners in the country.
