Covid-19: Prison visits suspended until further notice

The Prisons Department has announced the suspension of all prison visits due to the ongoing increase in the number of Covid-19 cases.

"The visiting sessions between prison inmates and their families at institutions throughout the country are suspended from Oct 14 until further notice.

"This includes meeting sessions between inmates and lawyers, the Royal Police Malaysia, embassies, and non-governmental organisations," said the Prisons Department in a statement today.

"This is one of the steps to prevent and curb transmission of Covid-19 among inmates and individuals in contact with prison institutions."

The Prisons Department added that further enquiries can be addressed to the respective prisons.

Information on prison institutions can also be found at the link, here.

Malaysia reported 660 new Covid-19 cases as of noon yesterday, bringing the total active cases to a new record of 5,345.

Covid-19 clusters in prisons, such as those at the Penang Remand Prison and the Tembok cluster in Alor Setar, Kedah are showing a spike in new cases.

The number of Covid-19 patients requiring intensive care yesterday was 101, up from 98 the day before, of which 32 required ventilator support. - Mkini
